The Indian Consulate in Shanghai recently hosted an enlightening talk on the significant role of India in advancing artificial intelligence (AI) globally. This event was presided over by Pratik Mathur, the Consul General of India in Shanghai, who facilitated a compelling discussion on India’s influence in AI and technology.

Keynote speaker Mukesh Sharma, the Regional Head of Tech Mahindra in China, addressed an audience hailing from over 15 countries. He elaborated on India’s extensive technological heritage, tracing its origins from ancient Sanskrit texts through to the development of large language models that accommodate India’s diverse linguistic landscape.

Sharma also emphasized India’s commitment to responsible AI, citing Prime Minister Modi’s co-chairing of the Paris Summit as a demonstration of India’s leadership in promoting AI that benefits society at large. The discussion further highlighted India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem, which ranks 19th globally, with Bengaluru recognized as one of the top 10 startup hubs worldwide.

Significant developments were noted, including India’s recent investment of $3 billion in AI infrastructure and the launch of the National Quantum Mission, alongside advancements in various AI applications across sectors such as agriculture, cleantech, spacetech, and healthcare.

The talk also examined the evolution of AI, forecasting a transition toward agentic AI that could lead to a multimodal singularity and, ultimately, to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
