On March 1, 2025, the 62nd Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded in Hangzhou, with China sharing its practices in disaster prevention. Spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted China’s support for the session, which resulted in outlines for the Seventh Assessment Report. This foundational work aims to enhance international climate governance by pooling global scientific resources.
China is committed to supporting Global South countries in their green transition. It has responded proactively to the U.N. initiative on meteorological early warning, sharing data with 132 nations and collaborating on early warning systems. By developing low-carbon projects across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, China is striving to reduce the costs of emission reductions and enhance global green production capabilities.
Responding to queries about U.S. tariffs set to take effect, Lin Jian reiterated China’s opposition to using the fentanyl issue as a justification for tariffs. He affirmed that measures will be taken to protect China’s legitimate interests.
Lin Jian expressed optimism regarding a newly signed cooperation agreement between China and Pakistan for spaceflight, welcoming the planned entry of a Pakistani astronaut into China’s space station. Regarding the Ukraine crisis, Lin Jian stated that China will continue its constructive role in seeking a peaceful resolution. He also confirmed that China did not instigate the conflict and called for a resolution taking into account the concerns of all parties involved.
Concerning the repatriation of 40 Chinese nationals from Thailand, Lin Jian asserted that the process respects international law and the lawful rights of the individuals involved, emphasizing China’s commitment to protecting citizens’ rights.
Lin Jian criticized comments from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, describing his accusations as reflective of Cold War mentality. He reaffirmed the One China principle, underscoring Taiwan’s status as an integral part of China, and urged the U.S. to adhere to this understanding to avoid escalation.
On the issue of trade wars, Lin Jian stated that such confrontations benefit no one and only harm economic relations. He stressed the importance of dialogue and consultation based on mutual respect and equality, highlighting the necessity for collective action against unilateral trade practices.
Lastly, Lin Jian dismissed theories surrounding the origins of COVID-19 being tied to a laboratory leak, referring to WHO findings that contradict such claims. He advocated for a global perspective in understanding the origins of the virus while calling on the U.S. to cease blaming China.
