Canada Rugby Sevens Men Prevail Over Tonga and Uganda to Reach Semifinals

Canada’s men’s rugby sevens team triumphed over Uganda and Tonga, finishing first in Pool B of the Challenger Series. They will face Germany in the semifinals after achieving significant victories. Following a challenging year, Canada is focused on qualifying for the top tier of rugby sevens once more.

In the latest World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger Series, Canada’s men’s rugby team achieved a commanding 38-7 victory over Uganda, highlighted by Kal Sager’s two tries. They had previously secured a narrow 26-24 win against Tonga and consequently topped Pool B, enabling them to advance to the Cup semifinal against Germany, the winner of Pool C, on Saturday.

In the match against Uganda, other Canadian players contributing to the scoreline included Ethan Hager, Jamie Armstrong, Kyle Tremblay, and Ethan Turner. Conversions were successfully executed by Thomas Isherwood, Brenden Black, Armstrong, and Turner.

Canada’s match against Tonga saw Armstrong score a pair of tries, complemented by contributions from Sager and Morgan Di Nardo. Armstrong and Isherwood collaborated on three conversions throughout the contest, pushing Canada to lead by margins of 12-0 and 19-10 at times, while skillfully managing attempts from Tonga to overcome them.

Notably, Canada had previously finished as runners-up in the first round of the Challenger Series in Cape Town where they remained unbeaten until facing defeat against Chile in the final. After a challenging year, which included finishing last in the elite HSBC SVNS circuit and being relegated following a loss to Spain, the Canadian team aims to secure a top-four position in the Challenger Series. This achievement would qualify them for a promotion/relegation tournament scheduled for May 3-4 in Carson, California.

The Challenger Series is currently taking place in Cape Town, with the next event set for March 7-8. The ultimate finale for the top eight teams will occur in Krakow, Poland, in April.

Canada’s rugby sevens men’s team showcased remarkable skill by dominating Uganda and narrowly defeating Tonga, securing their advancement to the semifinals of the Challenger Series. Their performance is a testament to their efforts following last year’s challenges, as they now aim for promotion back to the elite tier of rugby sevens. The upcoming matches are critical for their aspirations of qualifying for the elite HSBC SVNS circuit.
