Sudan has filed a case against the UAE at the ICJ, accusing it of complicity in genocide against the Masalit in West Darfur through support for the Rapid Support Forces. On Wednesday, Sudan initiated legal proceedings against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging the UAE’s complicity in genocide against the Masalit people in West Darfur. Sudan accused the UAE of providing substantial financial, political, and military support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, enabling atrocities such as murder, rape, theft, and human rights violations.
The legal filing stated that the UAE has engaged in actions contributing to the genocide against the Masalit since at least 2023. Sudan has requested that the ICJ impose urgent measures requiring the UAE to take steps to avert further acts defined under the Genocide Convention, particularly actions that could harm these communities.
In response to these allegations, the UAE has firmly denied Sudan’s claims, stating that they have not supplied weapons or ammunition to the RSF, which has been engaged in conflict against Sudanese armed forces for nearly a year.
Since April 2023, hostilities between the Sudanese army and the RSF have resulted in an estimated death toll exceeding 20,000, with local authorities and the UN reporting over 14 million people displaced. Some research even suggests that the death toll may reach approximately 130,000.
As the conflict escalates, international calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance continue to resonate, highlighting a looming crisis as millions confront severe food shortages and the threat of famine across 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
Sudan’s legal action against the UAE at the ICJ centers on accusations of complicity in genocide against the Masalit people, driven by alleged military and financial support for the RSF.
