The Nigerian federal government has announced its willingness to collaborate with the People’s Republic of China in combating the spread of fake news and misinformation about both nations. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, expressed this during a courtesy visit from Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yu Dunhai, at Radio House in Abuja.

Minister Idris highlighted the pervasive nature of fake news, emphasizing the importance of fostering cooperation between Nigeria and China to disseminate accurate information. He remarked, “Fake news is a global phenomenon, and we want to work with China to fight fake news, to fight misinformation, and to promote useful information that can help societies to grow and to also integrate with each other rather than divide us.”

He characterized fake news as a global hazard, urging for enhanced communication between the nations to share valid and precise information. Idris stated, “Misinformation, fake news, disinformation are a danger to the world… It’s not a phenomenon that is only peculiar to Nigeria or to China.”

Additionally, the Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to fulfilling all bilateral agreements with China, including the recently established Memorandum of Understanding between China Media Group and Nigeria’s National Television Authority as well as the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.

Ambassador Yu expressed his approval of the relationship between Nigeria and China, founded on mutual respect and cooperation. He noted the significance of the 54th anniversary of their bilateral ties and how both nations have supported each other during challenging times. Yu proclaimed, “Over the past half century, we have always stood together, we have always supported each other… I will spare no efforts to promote these bilateral relations to a new height.”

In summary, the partnership between Nigeria and China aims to address the critical issue of misinformation and fake news. Through mutual respect and shared goals, both countries aspire to exchange accurate information to contribute to societal growth. As they commemorate over five decades of diplomatic relations, both nations remain committed to enhancing their collaboration across various sectors, with a focus on respecting and preserving cultural integrity while promoting seamless communication.
