TikTok Shop Expands into Brazil and Japan as E-commerce Competition Grows

TikTok Shop is expanding into Brazil and Japan, launching in Brazil by April and Japan by June. It is inviting local merchants to join, with Brazilian operations managed by the Mexico team. TikTok is also expanding into Germany, France, and Italy while competing against established players in Latin America’s robust e-commerce market.

On March 4, it was reported that TikTok Shop, the social commerce platform from China, is expanding its reach into Brazil and Japan. Sources indicate that the platform will officially launch in Brazil as early as April and in Japan by June. The Brazilian operations will be managed by the existing team from Mexico, inviting local merchants to join prior to the application process opening.

Sellers in Brazil will face similar requirements as their counterparts in Mexico, but the platform’s “fully managed” service will not be available due to tariffs. On the other hand, the TikTok Shop in Japan will focus on local businesses and individuals, as it begins collecting intents from prospective merchants. Analysts predict that beauty, skincare, and pet products are likely to be top-selling categories in Japan.

Additionally, TikTok Shop is set to expand into Germany, France, and Italy, initially accepting locally registered businesses as merchants while planning to include independent sellers soon. The platform had previously tested its services in Spain and Ireland and is launching its “Fulfilled by TikTok” logistics service in Germany, along with hiring logistics workers in Spain.

Brazil has emerged as a significant player in the Latin American e-commerce sector, with strong competition from Amazon, Temu, Mercado Libre, and Shopee. To maintain its competitive edge, Amazon has reduced commissions and fees for several product categories. As TikTok enters this competitive landscape, other markets, especially in Southeast Asia, may play a more critical role for the platform, particularly given uncertainties in the U.S. market.

In summary, TikTok Shop is broadening its global presence by launching in Brazil and Japan within the coming months. With a strategic approach to managing local merchants and addressing market demands, TikTok aims to carve out significant market shares in these regions. The competitive e-commerce landscape in Brazil adds an additional challenge as TikTok navigates its expansion efforts.
