Safaricom, a prominent mobile operator in Kenya, has successfully completed the first phase of its data center located in Limuru, Kenya. This facility, situated in Redhill, consists of three buildings, with the first building’s phase one now finalized. As part of its development strategy, Safaricom aims to deliver 2.8MW of IT capacity by the conclusion of the second phase, anticipated in January 2026.
While the total IT capacity following full construction remains unspecified, Safaricom has confirmed that the data center will adhere to Tier III standards. Additionally, the center will incorporate sustainable features, including free cooling and solar energy to supplement grid power. Plans also include an innovation lab dedicated to testing new concepts, although detailed information on this initiative has not yet been disclosed.
Esther Karuga, the senior manager and overall lead of the Limuru facility, affirmed the project’s credibility by stating, “When we call it world-class, we’ve already been tested in terms of best practices and industry standards, and that means we play in the same league with Google and Microsoft.”
Limuru’s strategic location, just outside Nairobi, enables it to join a cluster of other major data facilities, including those of Digital Realty and Africa Data Centres. Furthermore, Safaricom operates additional facilities in cities such as Kisumu, Thika, and Arena, and also has two facilities located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
