On February 28, 2025, a high-level delegation from the European Parliament visited the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in Abu Dhabi. The purpose of the visit was to assess the UAE’s advancements in human rights. The delegation was briefed on the NHRI’s efforts to cultivate a human rights culture and its strategic initiatives that align with its mandate.
The members of the delegation commended the NHRI for its proactive engagement with both regional and international human rights organizations, particularly with the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). The significance of this visit was highlighted by Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, who welcomed the delegation along with their Secretary-General, Dr. Saeed Al Ghufli.
Kruse noted that the delegation’s visit underscores the growing recognition of the NHRI’s role in human rights advocacy. He stated, “This visit reflects the growing importance that international institutions place on the active role of the NHRI in promoting and protecting human rights.” Furthermore, he assured the NHRI’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the UAE’s reputation as a model for human rights and committing to international standards.
The delegation, led by Reinhold Lopatka and included several influential members such as Abir Al-Sahlani, Hana Jalloul, and Antonio López, was accompanied by key figures including Lucía Berger, EU Ambassador to the UAE. This meeting marked the second visit by a European Parliament delegation, following the initial visit in 2022, and further emphasizes the NHRI’s dedication to transparency and collaboration in global human rights discourse.
