Past efforts by President Joe Biden to foster engagement between US companies and the DRC’s mineral wealth were challenged by issues relating to corruption, labor rights, and environmental concerns. Furthermore, the US has been reluctant to support the DRC’s military, which has faced human rights violation allegations.
As Joshua Walker from New York University’s Center on International Cooperation noted, there are complexities involved in renegotiating mining contracts and uncertainty regarding the Trump administration’s ability to mobilize US investors. The new administration’s commitment to addressing Rwandan aggression within the DRC is also unclear. The letter, sent by lobbyist Aaron Poynton on behalf of Pierre Kanda Kalambayi, chair of the Congolese Senate’s Committee on Defence, Security, and Border Protection, was disclosed on the Foreign Agents Registration Act website and similar letters were issued to other key US officials.
