UN Envoy Criticizes Israel’s Military Actions in Syria, Calls for Respect of Sovereignty

The UN envoy for Syria condemned Israel’s military actions in the country, specifically its airstrikes, citing violations of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement. The escalating situation risks regional stability and undermines attempts at a political resolution. The envoy called for Israel to adhere to international obligations and respect Syria’s sovereignty.

GENEVA: The United Nations envoy for the Syrian Arab Republic, Geir Pedersen, condemned Israel’s recent military actions, including airstrikes targeting Syria, calling them “unacceptable.” These strikes reportedly hit the Tartus area, following reports of escalating Israeli military activity aimed at preventing Syria’s military assets from falling into the hands of hostile forces. Since the Islamist-led offensive that led to the ousting of President Bashar Assad, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes across Syria.

According to reports, Israel’s military presence has increased, with troops entering the UN-patrolled buffer zone that divides Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights, an area under Israeli control since 1967. Pedersen expressed deep concern regarding violations of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement and indicated that such actions could destabilize an already fragile situation and heighten regional tensions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the necessity of demilitarizing southern Syria, cautioning that his government would not tolerate the presence of the new Syrian Islamist-led forces in proximity to Israeli territory. Israel’s military operations, which began prior to Assad’s fall during the civil war in 2011, have predominantly targeted government forces and Iranian-affiliated entities.

Pedersen called upon Israel to cease its military violations, uphold its international obligations, and refrain from unilateral actions that exacerbate the ongoing conflict. He urged all involved parties to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stating that constructive dialogue and adherence to international law are crucial for enhancing security throughout the region.

The UN envoy has strongly criticized Israel’s military escalations in Syria, highlighting the risks these actions pose to regional stability and ongoing diplomatic efforts. Both Israel and regional actors are urged to respect Syria’s sovereignty and engage in constructive dialogue to maintain peace and prevent further conflict escalation.
