The Sudanese army has seized the eastern side of the Manshia Bridge from the RSF, gaining control over nine bridges connecting three key cities in Khartoum. This military advancement adds to the army’s recent territorial gains, as the conflict between the army and RSF intensifies, leading to significant casualties and displacement across Sudan.
On Tuesday, the Sudanese army successfully captured the eastern side of the strategic Manshia Bridge in Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In a military statement, it was reported that this bridge was the last stronghold of the RSF on the Blue Nile. The army showcased a video where a military commander was seen inspecting troops at the bridge’s entrance,
establishing their regained dominance.
With this advancement, the Sudanese army now controls a total of nine bridges linking three key cities in Khartoum. Specifically, the only remaining bridge outside their control is the Jebel Aulia Bridge located on the White Nile in southern Khartoum. The RSF has not publicly responded to the army’s recent achievements.
Furthermore, prior to the bridge capture, the Sudanese army had moved into the East Nile district in Khartoum, seizing multiple government sites. Over recent months, the army has significantly advanced against the RSF in various regions. Within Khartoum State, which comprises three cities, the army has secured Bahri in the north, most of Omdurman in the west, and approximately 75% of the city of Khartoum, where major installations like the presidential palace and international airport are located.
Despite these gains, the RSF continues to maintain its presence in both the eastern and southern neighborhoods of the capital. Since the onset of conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF in mid-April 2023, casualty estimates have been severe, with the UN and local authorities reporting over 20,000 fatalities and 14 million displaced individuals. However, research from U.S. universities has suggested that the death toll may be as high as 130,000. The ongoing conflict underscores the urgent need for humanitarian intervention and resolution in Sudan.
The recent capture of the Manshia Bridge marks a significant achievement for the Sudanese army in its ongoing conflict with the RSF, consolidating its control over critical transportation links in Khartoum. As the violence escalates, resulting in grave humanitarian consequences, the international community must respond decisively to address the crisis and support peace efforts in the region.
