Tropical Storm Honde displaced approximately 21,600 people in Southern Madagascar, resulting in three deaths and significant infrastructural damage. The Government is leading an emergency response, with partners providing essential supplies and assistance. Tropical Storm Honde impacted Southern Madagascar on March 2, displacing approximately 21,600 individuals, particularly in Toliara, Belo sur Tsiribihina, and Ampanihy. Initial assessments indicate three fatalities, one missing person, and 69 injuries. The storm resulted in significant destruction, affecting over 7,200 homes, with 1,924 completely destroyed, exacerbating an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Government is spearheading the response, with humanitarian partners mobilizing resources from both southern cities and the capital. Emergency efforts include search and rescue operations, providing food, water, sanitation, and hygiene kits, as well as medicines to those affected. Notably, a helicopter was deployed to assist around 80 to 100 stranded individuals in the Ampanihy District.
In terms of food security, partners have supplied 30 metric tons of rice and 7 metric tons of oil to the displaced individuals in Ampanihy, covering five days of rations. Water treatment supplies and WASH kits are being distributed in conjunction with awareness campaigns across the affected areas. Health partners are set to transport additional medical supplies to affected locations in the coming days.
The response to Tropical Storm Honde comes on the heels of humanitarian efforts following Cyclone Dikeledi in January. An inter-agency meeting took place on March 1 to strengthen coordination among local authorities and organizations for an effective response. Meanwhile, resources are running low, prompting a call for further support to replenish stocks as the cyclone season persists until April.
Tropical Storm Honde has caused significant devastation in Southern Madagascar, resulting in many displacements and casualties. The coordinated response led by the Government and supported by humanitarian partners aims to provide timely assistance amidst ongoing challenges. Continued support and resources are crucial to address the needs of the affected populations as the cyclone season progresses.
