An Israeli drone strike killed one person in Rashkananya, Lebanon, amid a fragile ceasefire. Although a ceasefire is in place, Israel has carried out operations in Lebanon, particularly targeting Hezbollah. Local leaders decry Israel’s continued occupation of strategic areas, asserting that this violates agreements and undermines Lebanese sovereignty, while calls for international assistance intensify.
A recent Israeli drone strike in the town of Rashkananya, located in Lebanon’s Tyre district, resulted in the death of one individual. The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported that the strike targeted a parked vehicle adjacent to a residential house, with images depicting a burning car at the scene. This incident marks a significant development amidst a fragile ceasefire established on November 27, 2024, which primarily sought to halt over a year of conflict, including two months of extensive warfare where ground troops from Israel invaded southern Lebanon.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces have continued to conduct military operations in Lebanon, as evidenced by a strike on a Hezbollah observation post on February 27. Following the ceasefire agreement, Israel was scheduled to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon by January 26 but later sought an extension until February 18. Just before this deadline, Israel declared its intent to maintain a presence in five strategically significant locations along the border, in contravention of the ceasefire terms.
Lebanese officials have raised concerns regarding the Israeli military’s persistence in occupying these five areas, with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Mustafa Berri stating that these actions in southern Lebanon represent an infringement on Lebanese sovereignty. The United Nations has underscored that Israeli delays in troop withdrawal breach both the ceasefire agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Furthermore, Mr. Katz, Israel’s War Minister, affirmed that the Israeli forces would indefinitely occupy what he termed a “buffer zone.”
Berri has firmly reiterated that Lebanon will oppose any Israeli endeavors to reshape the geopolitical landscape. He characterized the occupation as extending beyond mere border checkpoints, indicating the establishment of an encroaching security zone within Lebanese territory. Berri has urged the international community to take decisive action against repeated Israeli violations, asserting that Lebanon will not consent to any conditions tied to aid concerning military or political matters, specifically relating to the resistance forces active north of the Litani River.
The recent drone strike by Israel underscores ongoing tensions in southern Lebanon, particularly in light of a tenuous ceasefire agreement. Israel’s continued military presence in strategic areas, coupled with the condemnation from Lebanese leadership and the international community, highlights the fragility of the situation. As Lebanon resists Israeli infiltration and seeks to uphold its sovereignty, the call for international intervention remains pertinent.
