According to a recent study published in The Lancet, India is projected to have 450 million obese individuals by 2050, an increase from the current figure of 180 million. This significant rise in obesity rates is anticipated to cause severe repercussions for health services, particularly in countries with limited resources. The study highlights that over half of the world’s adults classified as overweight or obese in 2021 resided in just eight countries, including China, India, and the USA.
The report indicates that global rates of overweight and obesity among adults are expected to rise from approximately 43.4% in 2021 to an alarming 57.4% for men by 2050. China is expected to lead in the number of adults facing obesity, with 627 million, followed closely by India. The United States is projected to have 214 million adults classified as obese.
The findings presented by The Lancet underline a growing obesity epidemic, particularly in India, where rates are expected to double by 2050. This trend is exacerbated by poor dietary choices and reliance on processed foods high in unhealthy oils and sodium. In response to these challenges, there is an urgent need for public health initiatives, such as the campaign launched by Prime Minister Modi, to encourage healthier eating habits that could mitigate the rise in obesity-related health complications.
