Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua asserted that the GEMA communities will be instrumental in forming Kenya’s next government, with or without Raila Odinga. He criticized President Ruto, suggesting that his political survival relies on Odinga, while also expressing confidence in the electoral unity of the GEMA. Additionally, Gachagua has reached out to key opposition leaders to build a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba (GEMA) communities will play a crucial role in shaping the next Kenyan government, irrespective of Raila Odinga’s involvement. Addressing a congregation in Machakos, Gachagua expressed confidence in GEMA’s political strength, stating that unity among these communities would secure their dominance in future elections.
Gachagua declared, “GEMA ndiyo dawa ya Kenya. GEMA itaunda the next government,” emphasizing that the unity of these communities could ensure political influence for the next century. He underlined that GEMA’s numbers are sufficient to secure victory in the upcoming 2027 general elections, regardless of Odinga’s stance.
The former Deputy President criticized President William Ruto, alleging that Ruto’s political viability is now dependent on Odinga’s involvement. He remarked, “Life support machine ya Ruto ni Raila saa hii. Akizima, amekwisha,” predicting a challenging re-election campaign for Ruto in 2027, foreseeing his potential drop to third or fourth position in the results.
His comments come amid speculation regarding his own political future, with Gachagua having recently indicated openness to collaboration with opposition figures to possibly unseat President Ruto. He viewed recent political arrangements between Odinga and Ruto as a betrayal of opposition principles and expressed uncertainty about Odinga’s political motives.
In a conversation with Musyi FM, Gachagua claimed that Gen Z voters, who heavily influenced the last elections, are unlikely to support Ruto in 2027. He insisted, “Kenyans have already decided Ruto must go home and want a new government that serves them.”
Additionally, Gachagua has been engaging with notable political personalities such as Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other opposition leaders to form a formidable coalition against Ruto’s administration. This initiative signals a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
Gachagua’s assertions highlight the pivotal role of the GEMA communities in Kenya’s political future, emphasizing unity as a tool for political success. His critique of Ruto’s dependence on Odinga and the potential loss of Gen Z support illustrate the shifting dynamics within Kenyan politics. Engaging with opposition figures further suggests a possible reconfiguration of allegiances as the country approaches the next general elections.
