UAE and Italy Forge Alliance to Transform Water Infrastructure in MEA Region

The UAE and Italy have formed a partnership to enhance water infrastructure in the MEA region, focusing on sustainable solutions for water security. Metito Utilities has signed key agreements with Italian organizations, including CDP, SACE, and ACEA S.p.A. These collaborations aim to improve access to clean water and contribute to sustainable community development, particularly in Africa. Rami Ghandour emphasizes the potential of these partnerships to address critical infrastructure needs.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has established a significant alliance with Italy to advance water infrastructure across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, thereby bolstering water security for millions. At the recent UAE-Italy Business Forum in Rome, Metito Utilities, a global leader in sustainable water management, finalized three crucial Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with prominent Italian organizations, including Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), SACE, and ACEA S.p.A.

These strategic agreements, signed in the presence of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, aim to initiate transformative developments in water infrastructure. The partnerships align with Italy’s Mattei Plan and contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, specifically targeting clean water access and sustainable community initiatives.

Rami Ghandour, CEO of Metito Utilities, emphasized the importance of these collaborations stating that they present unprecedented opportunities to enhance sustainable solutions. He noted the synergy between Metito Utilities’ extensive expertise and the Italian partners’ financial and technical capabilities, which will facilitate addressing critical infrastructure challenges.

The collaboration with CDP is pivotal in unlocking funding mechanisms dedicated to water infrastructure projects, especially in Africa’s Official Development Assistance–eligible countries. This initiative not only aligns with Italy’s development objectives but also fosters opportunities for Italian enterprises while fulfilling the crucial infrastructure demands of developing nations.

Through the alliance with SACE, innovative financing solutions and insurance provisions will be introduced to expedite project development in Africa and the UAE. These measures are expected to fortify economic growth and sustainable advancement within the water sector, reinforcing the connection between Italian industries and emerging markets.

Partnering with ACEA S.p.A., Metito will lead the implementation of advanced water management solutions in Africa and the Middle East. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the establishment of water treatment facilities, desalination plants, and distribution systems, delivering essential water security resources to communities facing severe water shortages.

To capitalize on the growth opportunities within Africa, Metito Utilities will mobilize various funding sources and employ its expertise to actualize planned projects. This effort will be guided by the Africa Water Infrastructure Development (AWID) framework, designed to launch scalable climate-smart water initiatives that significantly improve water security throughout the continent.

This alliance between the UAE and Italy represents a pivotal step towards enhancing water security in the region, leveraging the strengths of various organizations to address urgent water infrastructure needs. The strategic partnerships emphasize innovative solutions and collaborative efforts, reinforcing commitments to sustainable development and international cooperation in water management. With shared goals and resources, these initiatives will facilitate better access to clean water and improve the quality of life for millions.
