Suriname has partnered with the World Bank on a US$22.2 million project to enhance resilience against environmental shocks. This initiative aims to improve flood risk management for 50,000 residents and support community-led projects, especially those led by women. The project addresses vulnerabilities associated with flooding, with potential damages expected to rise significantly by 2040 without intervention.
The World Bank announced that Suriname has entered into a new project aimed at enhancing resilience against environmental shocks. This initiative, known as the Suriname Preparedness and Enhancing Resilient Communities Project, is designed to bolster disaster resilience and has received approval from the Bank’s Board of Executive Directors. This marks the first project funded by the World Bank’s International Development Association since Suriname became a member of this institution in October 2024.
With an investment of US$22.2 million, the initiative aims to protect approximately 50,000 residents in Suriname’s capital, Paramaribo, while implementing community-led resilience strategies. Focus areas include improved flood management across 35 communities, with a commitment to ensuring that at least 50 percent of these initiatives are led by women. The project addresses the significant vulnerability of more than 87 percent of Suriname’s population, who reside along low-lying coastal areas prone to flooding.
The Greater Paramaribo region is particularly susceptible to flooding due to inadequate drainage facilities. The World Bank anticipates that without intervention, annual flood-related damages in Suriname may escalate to as high as US$140 million by the year 2040.
In conclusion, the Suriname Preparedness and Enhancing Resilient Communities Project represents a pivotal development for Suriname, facilitating much-needed investment in disaster prevention measures. The collaboration with the World Bank not only aims to improve flood risk management but also enhances community resilience through inclusivity and sustainable projects. This initiative is instrumental in securing a safer, more prosperous future for Suriname’s populations.
