Iran has publicly released the inaugural footage of the MSC Aries, a container ship associated with Israel, which the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) seized in the Strait of Hormuz last April. The video, aired on state television, captures the IRGC’s special naval forces conducting a heliborne operation to secure the vessel on April 13, 2024. At that time, the MSC Aries, owned by Zodiac Maritime linked to Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer, was operating under the Portuguese flag and had a crew of 24 individuals on board.
This operation showcased Iran’s maritime capabilities and highlighted its control over vital shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf, particularly the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The ship’s seizure coincided with Iran’s statements regarding potential reprisals against Israeli actions, including the assassination of Hamas’ Political Bureau chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in July 2024, along with other regional aggressions by Israel.
On the same day as the MSC Aries capture, the IRGC initiated Operation True Promise, targeting crucial Israeli military locations using a comprehensive arsenal of ballistic and cruise missiles. The Corps further escalated their military response with Operation True Promise II in October, demonstrating their commitment to counter Israeli military activities.
