Brazil’s Mero field reached a record production of 500,000 barrels of oil per day on February 28, 2023. Currently, four platforms operate in the field, with an additional FPSO set to enhance capacity later this year. This milestone highlights significant technological advances and collaboration among various partners, emphasizing the field’s critical role in Brazil’s energy landscape.
On February 28, Brazil’s Mero field achieved a significant milestone, producing 500,000 barrels of oil daily, marking it as the third site in operation by Petrobras to surpass this production level. The Mero field, part of the Libra block in the Santos Basin’s pre-salt region, has four operational platforms, with the first commencing production in 2017. Notably, the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão is slated to begin operations later this year, enhancing production capability further.
Magda Chambriard, CEO of Petrobras, emphasized the collaborative efforts and innovative technologies that have enabled this achievement. “Since extracting its first oil, Mero’s production has been marked by technological advances, innovation and production records. The 500,000 barrels per day mark is the result of the work of several areas and the new technologies used in our projects and in our day-to-day operations.”
The existing platforms include the Guanabara, Sepetiba, and Duque de Caxias, with the latter being the most productive. The introduction of FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão in 2025 will elevate Mero’s capacity to 770,000 barrels daily. Currently, pre-salt production constitutes 81% of Petrobras’ overall output.
Sylvia Anjos, Petrobras’ Exploration and Production Director, explained that Mero ranks as Brazil’s third-largest oil field, trailing only Tupi and Búzios in terms of oil volume. “Mero is the third largest field in Brazil and, in terms of volume of oil in place and production, is behind only Tupi and Búzios,” she affirmed, noting ongoing investments to enhance productivity while managing environmental impact.
Discovered in 2010, the Mero field is located in deep waters, approximately 180 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro. The field operates under the Libra Production Sharing Contract with multiple partners, including Petrobras and several international companies. The contract structure ensures thorough management and advancement of the field’s output while representing the interests of the Union in this non-contracted area.
The recent achievement of 500,000 barrels per day by Brazil’s Mero field represents a significant advancement in production capabilities within the oil industry. Continuous technological advancements, strategic partnerships, and sustainable operational practices by Petrobras underline the field’s importance in contributing to the nation’s energy future. The upcoming addition of FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão further signifies potential growth and innovation in Brazil’s oil production sector.
