On Friday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to relay a message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. The discussions centered on fortifying bilateral relations and addressing regional matters of common interest.

The meeting aimed to advance the bilateral cooperation initiated during President El-Sisi’s visit to Asmara in October 2024. Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that the visit was intended to enhance the tripartite coordination among Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, following the first ministerial meeting in Cairo held in January.

During their talks, Abdelatty and Afwerki reviewed the state of Egypt-Eritrea relations and sought ways to bolster collaborative efforts. They also addressed regional issues, particularly focusing on African stability and promoting peace and security in the Horn of Africa.

Special emphasis was placed on supporting Somalia in its battle against terrorism and asserting its territorial integrity. Additionally, discussions touched on the situation in Sudan, highlighting the need to support its national institutions while maintaining Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity.

The dialogue also extended to the developments in Libya and the Sahel region, alongside critical matters concerning the Red Sea. Egypt reiterated its position against the involvement of non-littoral Red Sea states in the governance and security of the region.

In summary, the meeting between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki highlighted the ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties, enhance cooperative endeavors, and address shared regional challenges. With a focus on stability in the Horn of Africa and mutual support, both leaders are committed to fostering the historical partnership between Egypt and Eritrea.
