Egyptian FM Engages Eritrean President to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

On Friday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to convey a verbal message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. The discussions aimed to strengthen bilateral relations and address regional matters of mutual importance.

Abdelatty’s visit to Asmara followed President El-Sisi’s visit to Eritrea in October 2024. The primary goal was to enhance the tripartite coordination mechanism involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, with the first ministerial meeting held in Cairo earlier this year.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that the meeting involved a comprehensive review of Egyptian-Eritrean relations and explored ways to bolster joint cooperation. Topics included the regional situation, particularly concerning Africa, and efforts to ensure peace and security in the Horn of Africa.

The discussions also focused on supporting Somalia in countering terrorism and advocating for its territorial sovereignty. Moreover, the conversation addressed developments in Sudan, emphasizing the need to support its national institutions while safeguarding its unity.

Additionally, they analyzed issues regarding Libya, the Sahel region, and the status of the Red Sea. Egypt reiterated its opposition to the involvement of non-littoral states in the security and governance of the Red Sea.

President Afwerki expressed his greetings to President El-Sisi and underscored his commitment to enhancing bilateral relations across all sectors, affirming that improved ties would satisfy the aspirations of both nations and highlight their historical connection.
