At the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Retreat in Penang, Malaysia, Minister for Defence Dr. Ng Eng Hen emphasized the necessity of ASEAN unity and collaboration to tackle emerging security challenges. He highlighted the importance of cooperation in the realms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Critical Underwater Infrastructure (CUI) security, essential for maintaining regional stability. The Defence Ministers collectively acknowledged the vulnerabilities of CUI and expressed support for the joint proposal by Singapore and Thailand to explore enhanced cooperation in CUI security.
The Ministers also issued a Joint Statement affirming cooperation in AI within the defence sector, which recognizes previous ASEAN efforts in addressing AI implications. The statement calls for promoting responsible AI usage among ADMM and ADMM-Plus members. Furthermore, the inclusion of Germany and Türkiye as observers in ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Groups was agreed upon, adding to the collaborative efforts of the region’s defence diplomacy.
In his comments, Dr. Ng reiterated the vital role of ADMM and ADMM-Plus as platforms for addressing regional security issues through strategic dialogue. He remarked on the importance of ASEAN solidarity in confronting both existing and emerging transnational security challenges. Reflecting on the progress made, he stated that the ADMM showcases regional cooperation effectively.
During the retreat, Dr. Ng also held bilateral meetings with the Malaysian Minister of Defence, Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, underscoring the strong defense ties between Singapore and Malaysia. They discussed ways to strengthen both bilateral and multilateral cooperation through various defense frameworks. Additionally, Dr. Ng met with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, where they reaffirmed robust ties and explored avenues to deepen defense collaboration significantly.
