Nigeria Hosts Global Summit to Safeguard Submarine Cable Infrastructure

In response to escalating concerns regarding attacks on submarine telecommunications cables, Nigeria recently hosted a significant summit aimed at bolstering their protection. There is increasing alarm over the vulnerability of the global network of approximately 500 submarine cables, which carry over 99% of international data traffic. Submarine cables face damage from diverse factors such as natural wear, corrosion, extreme weather, and interactions with marine life due to the harsh oceanic environment. Human error, including accidental anchor drops by ships, can also result in severe damages that are costly and time-consuming to repair.

More insidious threats stem from potential sabotage, as evidenced by a recent incident reported by CNN. The Taiwanese coast guard apprehended the cargo ship Hong Tai and its Chinese crew over suspicions of deliberately severing an undersea internet cable linking Taiwan.

Similar geopolitical tensions emerged in the Baltic Sea, where undersea cables connecting Germany and Finland were severed, prompting NATO to initiate the Baltic Sentry program for improved monitoring of undersea infrastructure in the region. U.S. Army General Christopher Cavoli remarked that this program symbolizes the alliance’s resolve to counter destabilizing actions.

While NATO’s response leans toward military preparedness, the Abuja summit explored alternative risk mitigation approaches. Participants discussed promoting varied cable routes, increasing landing points, and enhancing the efficiency of repair initiatives following infrastructure damage. Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Bosun Tijani, asserted, “With submarine cables forming the lifelines of the digital age, strengthening their resilience is a shared priority.”
