TEHRAN – Iran’s handicraft exports have amounted to $224 million during the current Persian calendar year, which commenced on March 20, 2024. Additionally, it is estimated that an equal value has been exported through suitcase trade, according to Seyyed Reza Salehi-Amiri, the Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts. The government is actively working to overcome barriers hindering handicraft exports, particularly through collaboration with the Central Bank to address foreign exchange commitments.
During a press conference following a cabinet meeting, Minister Salehi-Amiri emphasized ongoing efforts to provide insurance for artisans in the handicraft sector. He remarked, “Handicrafts are entering a new era with a promising future ahead.” The Minister relayed that Saeed Al-Qaddoumi, President of the World Crafts Council, has referred to Iran as a “paradise of handicrafts,” highlighting the exceptional artistic and commercial value of Iranian artisans’ work on the international platform.
Moreover, Salehi-Amiri acknowledged the cultural relevance of the simultaneous observances of Nowruz and Ramadan. He referred to previous instances where similar cultural intersections occurred harmoniously, expressing confidence in the public’s ability to honor Ramadan traditions while fostering social vibrancy. Last week, during the closing ceremony of the 9th International Fajr Handicrafts Festival, he recognized Iran’s substantial contributions to global handicrafts and its rich artistic heritage.
