China is enhancing its partnership with Zimbabwe through a major investment of US$3.6 billion in the Palm River Energy Metallurgical Industrial Park. The initiative is spearheaded by Xinganglian (Shanxi) Holding Group, which aims to capitalize on Zimbabwe’s rich deposits of coal, iron ore, and chrome. The industrial park will span 5,163 hectares within a special economic zone, facilitating mining, power generation, coke production, and steel manufacturing, all of which are expected to unfold in five phases over a 12-year timeline.
Experts suggest that China’s investment reflects its strategic choice of Zimbabwe as its primary site for steel and chrome industrialization in Africa. According to Lauren Johnston, an associate professor at the University of Sydney’s China Studies Centre, “This makes sense. Zimbabwe has a rich human capital and natural resource endowment.”
