The United Nations has issued a grave warning regarding the ongoing conflict in Sudan, stating that the country is on the brink of catastrophe if the war does not cease and humanitarian aid is not provided. UN human rights chief Volker Turk described the situation in Sudan as dire, with millions displaced and famine conditions already present in multiple regions.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a fierce conflict between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, leader of the Rapid Support Forces. Turk emphasized the extreme vulnerability of the Sudanese populace, noting that urgent action is required to alleviate their suffering.
“I cannot overstate the seriousness of the situation in Sudan; the desperate plight of the Sudanese people; and the urgency with which we must act to ease their suffering,” Turk remarked during a session of the UN Human Rights Council. He highlighted the human rights crisis and humanitarian disaster, which have emerged since the conflict began.
Turk warned that without immediate intervention, hundreds of thousands could perish as over 600,000 are currently on the verge of starvation. Reports confirm that famine has affected five areas, including the Zamzam displacement camp in North Darfur, where violence has prompted organizations like Doctors Without Borders to suspend operations.
He indicated that five additional areas may face famine in the coming months, while 17 others are under threat. The conflict has resulted in approximately 8.8 million internally displaced persons within Sudan, with a further 3.5 million crossing borders.
Describing it as the largest displacement crisis globally, Turk stated that roughly 30.4 million individuals require assistance, including healthcare and food, with less than 30 percent of healthcare facilities operational. Disease outbreaks are rampant in the displacement camps.
He urged global cooperation to find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict and mitigate the crisis faced by the Sudanese people.
