A delegation from the ruling party of Tanzania, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), led by Secretary-General Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, has arrived in Namibia to attend the state funeral of the nation’s founding president, Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, scheduled for March 1, 2025. Upon arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport on February 26, 2025, Dr. Nchimbi was greeted by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Namibia, Caesar Waitara.
The CCM delegation will engage in a series of activities to honor Dr. Nujoma, commencing on February 27, 2025. Notably, events organized by Namibia’s ruling SWAPO party will pay tribute to its long-standing leader, highlighting the ties between CCM and SWAPO that have developed during the historical struggle for independence from colonialism and apartheid.
Dr. Nchimbi is anticipated to attend the national memorial service on February 28, 2025, before participating in the official state funeral at Heroes’ Acre cemetery on March 1, 2025. The friendship between Tanzania and Namibia has flourished notably since Dr. Nujoma and various SWAPO leaders were sheltered in Tanzania during the 1960s, contributing significantly to Namibia’s path to independence in 1990.
Dr. Nujoma, remembered as an activist and guerrilla leader, made history as Namibia’s first democratically elected president post-independence from apartheid South Africa. He passed away at the age of 95 on February 8, a position that resulted in his acknowledgment as the “Founding Father of the Namibian Nation” by an act of parliament in 2005.
The visiting CCM delegation reflects the enduring friendship between Tanzania and Namibia, with both parties joined together by their historical legacy of struggle for independence. Their participation in the state funeral honors Dr. Nujoma’s contributions as Namibia’s founding president and highlights the significance of international solidarity between the two nations. Dr. Nujoma’s legacy continues to resonate in Namibia and beyond, further solidifying his pivotal role in the country’s history.
