Qatari and Libyan Leaders Discuss Cooperation and Regional Stability

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh held talks focusing on bilateral cooperation and regional issues, particularly concerning the situations in Gaza and Syria. They discussed the necessity of supporting Libya’s political process and emphasized the importance of upcoming elections to resolve the ongoing political crisis in Libya.

On Tuesday in Doha, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani engaged in discussions with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh regarding enhancing bilateral cooperation and addressing regional developments, particularly the situations in Gaza and Syria.

Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar’s unwavering dedication to Libya’s unity, emphasizing the importance of fostering stability and development within the nation. Furthermore, he expressed Qatar’s commitment to supporting the Libyan political process and upholding relevant UN Security Council resolutions to ensure peaceful resolutions that respect Libya’s sovereignty.

Efforts by both local and international bodies are ongoing to facilitate elections in Libya, aimed at resolving the current crisis between the two competing governments. This situation involves the Government of National Unity led by Dbeibeh in Tripoli, recognized by the United Nations, and the rival government in Benghazi, directed by Osama Hamad and formed under the House of Representatives in 2022.

The citizens of Libya hold hope that the anticipated elections will effectively conclude the ongoing political and armed conflicts, thereby ending the transitional periods arising since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.

In summary, the discussions between the Qatari and Libyan Premiers highlight substantive cooperation on key regional issues and reaffirm Qatar’s support for Libya’s stability. With ongoing efforts aimed at restoring governance and moving towards elections, both leaders remain committed to establishing Libya’s sovereignty and unity, amidst challenging political circumstances.
