Mongolia has officially signed an agreement with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to host COP17 in Ulaanbaatar in 2026. The Conference of Parties session focuses on combating desertification and will feature participation from 194 countries. Ambassador Jargalsaikhan Ensaikhan emphasized the urgency of addressing desertification in Mongolia and its neighboring areas, as the Gobi desert continues to expand.
With approximately 60% of the region’s land used for grazing, Mongolia’s economy heavily relies on pastoralism, which supports one-third of its population. However, estimates suggest over 70% of Mongolia’s land is threatened by desertification, leading to negative effects on food security, biodiversity, and local herders’ livelihoods.
In response to this pressing challenge, Mongolia is implementing a national reforestation initiative called “One Billion Trees,” which aims to plant one billion trees by 2030. This campaign encourages citizens to contribute to reforestation efforts, which help secure topsoil and retain moisture, essential for combating desertification.
Ambassador Ensaikhan highlighted the importance of selecting appropriate tree species for planting, noting that not every tree type is suitable for Mongolia’s climate. He emphasized the necessity for research and technical guidance to enhance the effectiveness of these reforestation efforts.
The COP17 meeting in 2024 aims to facilitate the exchange of best practices in combating desertification and promote collaborative research initiatives. As Ensaikhan observed, the current efforts towards effective reforestation require significant attention and coordination.
Mongolia is set to play a pivotal role in the international fight against desertification by hosting COP17 in 2026.
