INAM predicts the formation of two tropical cyclones, Honde and Garance, affecting the Mozambique Channel with strong winds and rain. Cyclone Honde is expected to evolve into a full cyclone, impacting land weather. Tropical Storm Garance will not affect Mozambique directly. Caution is advised for maritime navigation due to these weather systems.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) forecasts the development of two tropical cyclones, named ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, expected to form between Thursday and Friday in the southern and eastern regions of Madagascar. Notably, the systems may generate strong winds across the Mozambique Channel. Currently, Tropical Storm Honde is situated approximately 250 kilometers off the coast of Inhambane province, heading southward towards Madagascar.
As Tropical Storm Honde progresses, it is anticipated to intensify into a full tropical cyclone by Friday, February 28. This transformation is likely to result in strong winds within the Mozambique Channel, accompanied by light to moderate rainfall, which may become locally heavy across various areas of Mozambique.
Meteorologist Lelo Tayob stated, “This system is not in our country, it is at sea, in the Mozambique Channel. However, it is large and impacts the general circulation of the atmosphere, and this generates rain. Its direct effects are at sea, but, due to the air masses, the rains will be felt on the mainland.”
Tropical Storm Garance, located to the east of Madagascar, is also projected to evolve into a tropical cyclone. However, it poses no threat to Mozambique. Tayob explained, “Tomorrow, [Tropical Storm Garance] will evolve into a tropical cyclone, but given its size, location and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country. It is moving east and will not cross.” INAM emphasizes the importance of adhering to safety precautions, particularly in maritime navigation, as these weather systems develop.
In summary, INAM has issued warnings regarding the potential formation of cyclones Honde and Garance in the Madagascar region. While Cyclone Honde may lead to strong winds and rainfall in the Mozambique Channel, Cyclone Garance is not expected to impact Mozambique. Meteorologists stress the need for caution, particularly for maritime activities, due to the potential atmospheric disturbances from both systems.
