At the invitation of President Luis Lacalle Pou of Uruguay, President Xi Jinping’s special envoy, Han Jun, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, will visit Montevideo to attend the inauguration of President Yamandú Orsi on March 1, 2025.
A panel discussion commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action took place on February 24 during the UN Human Rights Council’s 58th session. Notable participants included Liu Yang, China’s first female astronaut, who emphasized the importance of gender equity and women’s empowerment in her keynote speech.
Liu Yang reflected on her experiences as a beneficiary of the principles established by the Beijing Declaration, highlighting the need for equitable competition in astronaut training. She articulated that this represents China’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and that the Beijing Declaration marked a significant achievement globally for women.
Responding to international matters, Lin Jian acknowledged reports of a collaboration between Ukraine and the U.S. to develop natural resources but refrained from additional commentary. Regarding tariffs on copper imports, he stated that trade wars yield no winners and called for dialogue and mutual respect.
Addressing tensions with Taiwan, Lin Jian declined to comment on perceived military activities but reiterated China’s stance against U.S. military support to Taiwan, citing violations of the one-China principle. He urged the U.S. to cease actions that threaten stability in the Taiwan Strait.
On another note, Lin Jian expressed great concern over reports regarding U.S. foreign aid to Taiwan, warning that such military assistance undermines China’s sovereignty. Overall, the Foreign Ministry remains vigilant in safeguarding national interests and promoting cooperation with regional partners.
The press conference highlighted China’s diplomatic efforts, including participation in Uruguay’s presidential inauguration and a focus on women’s empowerment through the Beijing Declaration. The ministry reiterated its commitment to dialogue in international relations, while also firmly opposing U.S. military aid to Taiwan and tariff strategies that threaten fair trade.
