Chile’s CONAF has deployed an AS332 Super Puma helicopter to aid firefighting efforts in Argentina’s Patagonia, specifically in the province of Neuquén. This response comes amidst a major wildfire crisis that has damaged over 34,000 hectares of forest. The helicopter can drop significant amounts of water and is collaborating with local authorities to combat the ongoing fires.
Chile’s National Forest Corporation (CONAF) has sent an AS332 Super Puma helicopter to assist in firefighting operations in Argentina’s Patagonia region. This aircraft, registered as ZT-RYC, is operated by Ecocopter+Helisul and has the capacity to drop up to 3,500 liters of water per sortie. The deployment is a response to the severe wildfire crisis affecting the area, where over 34,000 hectares of forest have been devastated by the flames.
The Super Puma will primarily operate in Neuquén province and will provide support for a minimum of 14 days. The wildfires have caused significant destruction, encompassing more than 12,000 hectares in Nahuel Huapi National Park in Río Negro and nearly 22,000 hectares in Lanín National Park in Neuquén. Challenging weather conditions, including high temperatures and strong winds, have exacerbated the crisis.
Francisco Arriagada, Commercial Manager of Ecocopter+Helisul, commented on the situation, stating, “We are deeply concerned by the magnitude of the fires in Argentine Patagonia and we are providing support to protect this valuable ecosystem. We are committed to protecting people, communities, and the environment…”. Helisul merged with Ecocopter in May of the previous year, enhancing collaborative firefighting efforts.
In summary, the Chilean National Forest Corporation has proactive measures in place to combat the severe wildfires devastating the Argentine Patagonia. The deployment of the AS332 Super Puma helicopter signifies a commitment to ecological preservation and community safety. This joint effort among Chilean and Argentine authorities underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing natural disasters.
