Two of the veterans returned to New Delhi on February 11, 2024, following extensive negotiations for their release, while Commander Purnendu Tiwari remains detained in Qatar.
On the eve of Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani’s visit to India, the veterans urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Amir to expedite the return of their colleague, Commander Tiwari. They emphasized the significance of this diplomatic engagement in resolving Tiwari’s travel ban, which has currently prolonged his separation from family.
Among those released were Captains Navtej Gill and Saurabh Vasisht, along with Commanders Sanjeev Gupta, Amit Nagpal, BK Verma, Sugunakar Pakala, and sailor Ragesh. The joint appeal from Gupta and Pakala highlighted their positive outlook toward a speedy resolution and reiterated the emotional toll the situation has taken on Tiwari’s family, particularly his elderly mother.
The eight individuals had been employed by Al Dahra Global Technologies, providing training services to Qatari armed forces. They were detained on ambiguous charges since August 2022, with the primary trial concluding in December 2023. Commander Tiwari was notably recognized with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, a prestigious honor for non-resident Indians.
Gupta described their 17-month imprisonment as harrowing, recalling moments of despair. During such trying times, he managed to read numerous books and maintain bodily fitness through yoga and meditation, showcasing resilience despite the circumstances.
