The 2023 edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII) assesses global innovation trends amidst an uncertain economic backdrop. It ranks the world’s most innovative economies among 132 nations and identifies the leading 100 science and technology innovation clusters. This ongoing evaluation seeks to provide critical insights into the innovation landscape and the performance of different economies.
For the thirteenth consecutive year, Switzerland holds the title of the most innovative economy, closely followed by Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. Notably, Sweden has surpassed the United States to claim the second position this year. Singapore has entered the top five, emerging as a leader in the South East Asia, East Asia, and Oceania region for innovation.
The report highlights the top science and technology (S&T) innovation clusters worldwide, with Tokyo–Yokohama leading this year. Following closely are Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou, Seoul, Beijing, and Shanghai-Suzhou. China has now overtaken the United States, boasting the largest number of innovation clusters globally.
The Global Innovation Tracker assesses key trends in innovation investments and gauges the progress and adoption of technology, as well as the subsequent socioeconomic impacts. Despite challenges such as high inflation, increased interest rates, and geopolitical conflicts, the tracker indicates that breakthrough technologies continue to offer new opportunities for innovation, though their social impact remains limited in the current context.
