Tullow and TotalEnergies Secure Offshore Drilling Contracts in Ghana and Suriname

Tullow and TotalEnergies have announced new drilling contracts in Ghana and Suriname. Tullow plans to enhance production at the Jubilee field by restarting drilling in May 2025. TotalEnergies will conduct exploration drilling with the Stena DrillMAX drillship starting Q2 2025. Additional contracts were secured by Equinor, Halliburton, and ADES for various drilling projects in multiple locations, emphasizing a significant uptick in offshore activities.

In a recent update regarding offshore drilling, Tullow and TotalEnergies have secured contracts for drillships aimed at operations in Ghana and Suriname, respectively. Tullow expects to alleviate declining production rates at Ghana’s Jubilee field by enhancing water injection capabilities, with drilling scheduled to resume in May 2025. Meanwhile, TotalEnergies has contracted the Stena DrillMAX drillship for an exploration well offshore Suriname, with potential extensions for additional wells.

Tullow’s advances include the initiation of a 4D seismic survey across the Jubilee and TEN fields to pinpoint future well locations. The first drilling activities, including one producer and one injector well, are anticipated to commence in May 2025, leading to operational advancements by the third quarter. The company aims to reduce costs and improve development potential at the TEN field.

TotalEnergies has contracted the Stena DrillMAX drillship to perform an exploration well and-managed pressure drilling program, set to begin in the second quarter of 2025. The contract includes options to expand the program to three additional wells if performance demands. This collaboration underscores the growing interest in offshore drilling opportunities in Suriname.

Equinor has successfully extended its contract for the Deepsea Atlantic rig until the end of the second quarter of 2027, generating an additional value of approximately $148 million. The rig, originally operating under an earlier agreement, may continue with further optional periods, potentially extending its service contract into 2030.

In a strategic partnership, Reelwell has inked a contract with Vår Energi for its DualLink powered digital drillpipe technology, marking its debut deployment on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. This initial one-year contract offers four potential extensions and supports Vår Energi’s future operational needs while enhancing drilling data collection and telemetry integration.

Halliburton has received a significant contract from Petrobras for integrated drilling services across various offshore fields in Brazil. The three-year contract equips Halliburton to utilize its advanced technologies, including intelligent rotary steerable systems and remote operations platforms, beginning in 2025. The contract stands as Halliburton’s largest service commitment with Petrobras.

ADES has finalized a jackup drilling contract for six wells offshore Nigeria, valued at approximately $21.8 million. The Admarine 504 rig is scheduled to commence operations in the second quarter, with ADES collaborating with Valiant Offshore Contractors for joint management of rig operations while ensuring high operational standards.

The recent drilling contracts secured by Tullow, TotalEnergies, Equinor, Halliburton, and ADES indicate a robust engagement in offshore drilling activities across key regions including Ghana, Suriname, Brazil, and Nigeria.
