South Sudan has lifted its ban on Facebook and TikTok, initially imposed to address graphic content linked to violence in Sudan. The National Communication Authority reported that their goals to curb incendiary content were achieved. The regulator plans to work with stakeholders to enhance monitoring and ensure a safer online environment.
South Sudan has officially lifted its temporary suspension on social media platforms Facebook and TikTok, which had been imposed due to graphic content concerning violence against South Sudanese nationals in Sudan. The National Communication Authority (NCA) stated that the primary objective of addressing harmful content had been met. NCA Director General Napoleon Adok Gai emphasized the importance of balancing the need to manage online incitement while safeguarding citizens’ rights.
The decision to suspend these platforms stemmed from violent riots in South Sudan following the release of distressing footage depicting attacks on South Sudanese refugees in Sudan. This unrest led to the loss of lives and significant property damage. The regulator’s actions aimed to prevent the escalation of violence through the circulation of inflammatory content on social media.
The lifting of the ban reflects South Sudan’s commitment to ensuring a secure digital environment while fostering peace. Moving forward, the NCA intends to collaborate with stakeholders, including internet service providers and social media platforms, to monitor and manage harmful content more effectively, mitigating risks of future conflicts.
