French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot specifically denounced the assault on France’s embassy in Kinshasa, asserting, “These attacks are unacceptable. Everything is being done to ensure the safety of our personnel and our citizens.” Attacks were reported at multiple embassies, including those of Belgium, the Netherlands, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and the United States, amid escalating conflict in the eastern region.
These protests are linked to the advance of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels into Goma, prompting demonstrators to demand international intervention against Rwanda’s alleged backing. Protester Timothee Tshishimbi stated, “We denounce the hypocrisy of the international community. They must tell Rwanda to stop this adventure.”
In response to the ongoing violence, Germany’s development ministry announced the cancellation of planned discussions with Rwanda, emphasizing a need for de-escalation before cooperation can resume. The statement indicated that ongoing hostilities involving the M23 rebels warrant a reevaluation of diplomatic engagements.
