The Iraqi Embassy in Libya, led by Ahmed Al-Sahaf, announced the return of two Iraqis who had attempted illegal immigration. Previously, the embassy facilitated the return of 39 citizens involved in similar circumstances. The embassy provided support services for those returning and coordinated efforts with Libyan authorities to ensure the safety of migrants.
On Monday, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Iraqi Embassy in Libya, declared the return of two Iraqis who had initially entered Libya seeking illegal immigration routes to Europe. This return is part of the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of Iraqi citizens.
The embassy reported a total of 39 Iraqi citizens were returned voluntarily, with 25 of them repatriated in 2024 and 12 in the previous week. In a recent statement, Al-Sahaf emphasized the embassy’s commitment to coordinating with Libyan authorities to assist migrants in avoiding the perils associated with illegal immigration networks.
Al-Sahaf stated, “The embassy was able again this morning to complete the procedures for deporting two citizens who had taken the path of illegal immigration through Libya to reach Europe.” Efforts included providing essential support, such as housing, food, and medical treatment for the repatriated individuals.
These initiatives align with the principle of voluntary return and involve high-level coordination between the Iraqi Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad. Additionally, collaboration occurred with the Foreign Relations Committee of the Iraqi Parliament to facilitate the return process and secure travel arrangements.
The Iraqi government actively engages in the voluntary return of its citizens who find themselves in unsafe situations abroad, particularly in Libya, which is a significant transit point for migrants aiming to reach Europe. The Embassy of Iraq in Libya plays a critical role in coordinating with Libyan authorities to assist citizens who entered the country through illegal means. This initiative is central to Iraq’s diplomatic efforts to protect its nationals and ensure their safe return home.
The Iraqi Embassy in Libya has successfully facilitated the voluntary return of citizens seeking to escape the dangers of illegal immigration. Through coordinated efforts with Libyan authorities, the embassy has provided essential support to returnees, emphasizing the importance of safety for those entangled in migrant networks. This approach reflects Iraq’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad.
