Italy and Dominican Republic Strengthen Aerospace Cooperation on National Space Day

On the occasion of National Space Day, the Embassy of Italy in the Dominican Republic, in collaboration with the Dominican National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL), Pedro Henríquez Ureña University, and Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec), held the conference titled “Promoting Aerospace Development: Italian-Dominican Cooperation” at Intec. This significant event engaged students from both institutions, emphasizing the crucial role of nano-satellites in addressing challenges such as monitoring sargassum, enhancing marine biodiversity, and improving risk prevention measures.

Marco Lisi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s envoy for space, expressed Italy’s commitment to assisting the Dominican Republic in establishing capabilities for gathering and analyzing aerospace data. He also highlighted Italy’s National Space Day, which commemorates the 60th anniversary of the launch of Italy’s first satellite, San Marco I, on December 15, 1964. Paulo Marzioli from Rome’s La Sapienza University discussed the positive impacts of space technology on various fields, including aeronautics and mechatronics.

Rodolfo Colaci, acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Italian Embassy in Santo Domingo, emphasized the significance of international cooperation in space. Teodoro Jiménez, head of Geomantics at CNCCMDL, pointed out the critical collaboration between Italy and the Dominican Republic, particularly in establishing the National Centre for Processing Climate Archives and Satellite and Drone Images. Additionally, engineer Edwin Sánchez Camilo provided details on the Quisqueyasat-1 project, developed with Italy’s collaboration, stressing the need to monitor the sargasso phenomenon and prepare for more advanced future projects.
