Lima (VNA) – On November 16, during the 2024 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Lima, Peru, Vietnam’s State President, Luong Cuong, convened a meeting with the Republic of Korea’s (RoK) President, Yoon Suk Yeol. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the flourishing Vietnam-RoK relationship, now at its peak, particularly following their recent elevation to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. President Cuong emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to its partnership with the RoK, highlighting their reliable collaboration across various sectors, such as politics, trade, culture, and exchanges between people. He extended warm regards from prominent Vietnamese leaders—Party General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man—to President Yoon and other RoK officials. In response, President Yoon congratulated Cuong on his appointment and reinforced Vietnam’s significance in the RoK’s ASEAN relations and Indo-Pacific Strategy. The leaders agreed on the necessity of maintaining regular high-level exchanges and collaborations. They set ambitious economic targets, striving towards a bilateral trade goal of $100 billion in the near future, and establishing a balanced figure of $150 billion by 2030. The RoK pledged to assist Vietnam notably in education, technology transfer, and business integration into global supply chains led by Korean companies. Furthermore, they discussed enhancing Official Development Assistance (ODA) for Vietnam to foster critical infrastructure projects and initiatives regarding climate change and green energy. Collaboration was also underscored in addressing mutual international concerns. Both leaders advocated for a peaceful resolution of disputes in the East Sea, emphasizing the importance of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) for ensuring navigational freedoms. Concluding their meeting, Cuong extended an invitation to Yoon to visit Vietnam, reciprocating Yoon’s earlier invitation for a visit to the RoK as soon as feasible, underlining the intention to arrange these visits through diplomatic channels.
