On November 4-5, 2024, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met with his Nigerian counterpart, Nuhu Ribadu, in New Delhi for the second Strategic and Counter-Terrorism Dialogue between India and Nigeria. During their discussions, the two NSAs focused on collaborative strategies to combat terrorism, extremism, and international crime, including arms and drug trafficking. Both parties expressed their commitment to enhancing bilateral capacity building and international cooperation in the fight against terrorism, emphasizing that there is no justification for terrorist acts in any form. Furthermore, during his visit, NSA Ribadu toured the National Security Guard facilities in Manesar, underscoring the importance of operational collaboration. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the long-standing diplomatic ties between India and Nigeria, which date back to India’s first diplomatic mission in Lagos in 1958, two years prior to Nigeria’s independence. Currently, approximately 50,000 Indians reside in Nigeria, contributing significantly to bilateral relations. The relationship between the two nations has been further ameliorated by high-level political engagements, including last year’s G20 leaders’ summit where Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Additionally, a recent initiative titled “India-Nigeria Youth Connect” promoted exchanges on cultural, entrepreneurial, and empowerment topics, aiming to strengthen the historic bond between the two countries.
The collaboration between India and Nigeria encompasses various facets, particularly in the realm of security and counter-terrorism. This consultative dialogue reflects both governments’ recognition of the critical threats posed by terrorism and organized crime, which have significant implications for both nations. Establishing deep-rooted diplomatic ties has characterized India-Nigeria relations since the mid-20th century, facilitating ongoing political and social exchanges. The substantial Indian diaspora in Nigeria not only enhances these relations but also underscores the interconnectedness of the two nations’ futures in combating transnational challenges.
The meeting between NSAs Ajit Doval and Nuhu Ribadu symbolizes a strategic step towards strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperative measures against terrorism and international crime. Both nations reiterated their commitment to a unified response against these global threats, highlighting the significance of collaboration in ensuring national and international security. The ongoing diplomatic engagements reflect a mutual respect for each country’s sovereignty while fostering a partnership based on common challenges and shared aspirations for peace and stability.
